After I graduated from college in 1968, I didn't take anymore college classes until the spring semester of 1977. I took a course that was purely for my own pleasure. Next to Fort Hood is Central Texas College. Having a college close to a military installation is good because military personnel and their families can take classes and get degrees. So I enrolled in a course called Freehand Drawing. I learned a lot in that class. I learned it so well that I made an A! I was so happy. The fall semester of that year I took Creative Design I and made another A. I was on a roll! I followed that up with a B in Graphic Media the next semester. It wasn't an A, but again I learned a lot.
It was several years before I took another college course. Eleven years later (1990), my husband was again stationed at Fort Hood. It was his last duty assignment. Of course, the college was still there. So in the spring of 1993, I decided to take Introduction to Computer Science and Programming. Many times I wondered if it was a mistake. I struggled immensely with some of the assignments. I had nighmares dreamed about them in my sleep. All those codes drove me crazy. But would you believe it?! I ended up with an A. I am very proud of that A because I had to work so hard to get it.
The last course I took at the college was in the fall of 1996. I had just been promoted to technical editor in an Army organization called Test and Experimentation Command. I was in training for a year, part of which was to take a class called Elementary Statistics. So back to Central Texas College I went, but this time I didn't have to pay for the class. I also went during the workday. I struggled with some portions of the class, but thank goodness I had help from other editors in my office who had taken the class in the past. I could also do my homework during work. I guess I'm a bit competitive, too. Three of the other technical editors had gotten A's in the class, so I just had to do the same. And I did!
