Hearing and Hearing Aids

posted Wednesday, 15 June 2005
During grade school, D and I had earaches.  My mom would put warm oil in our ears.  Since then I’ve learned doing that is not a good thing.  Both D and I have some hearing loss.  Her doctor said it is probably caused by childhood infections.  My doctors never gave a reason.  I started wearing a hearing aid in my right ear at the age of 35.  At 41, I had a stapedectomy on that ear.  They replaced the stapes in my inner ear with a Teflon one.  It helped my hearing, but I still wear a hearing aid.  In fact, I wear them in both ears.  They say that only a small percentage of people that could hear better with hearing aids actually wear them.  Boy, am I glad that someone invented them!  I remember when I got my first one.  After the doctor put it in my ear, she told me go walk around the hospital, get a coke, and see what I thought.  So my husband and I went to the cafeteria.  I heard this beeping sound.  I asked, "What is that sound?"  It was the cash register from clear across the room!  It was an amazing thing!

I realized that it has been awhile since I added a photo to one of my entries.  This photo has nothing to do with the subject of my entry.  It was taken on Easter 1954.  I don't know which twin is me.  But if I had to guess, I'd say the one on the right.  (Because, although D and I looked exactly alike, I was cuter!  If my mother reads this, she'll probably say that I'm the one on the left.)  That's our little sister C in a dress that our mother made.

Interesting how things change over the years (like medicinal - some work better, some have been discovered to be worse (like yours)). I LOVE the picture.

It is a good thing that a hearing aid will help you. My son Dave has nerve damage in his left ear and a hearing aid won't help him. He sure could use one. Hey, where is your counter.
